Retinol and Menopause Skin: Why It's Not Always the Answer

Retinol: the gold standard with a small print

If you've ever Googled 'how to deal with ageing skin,' retinol has almost certainly come up. And for good reason — it's one of the most researched skincare ingredients out there. It stimulates collagen production, speeds up cell turnover, fades dark spots, and smooths texture. The evidence is genuinely impressive.

But here's the thing nobody tells you: retinol was formulated and tested predominantly on younger skin. The kind with a robust barrier, decent oil production, and hormones doing their usual supportive thing. And menopausal skin? That's a different story.

Why menopause makes retinol complicated

When oestrogen declines, your skin becomes thinner, drier, and significantly more sensitive. The moisture barrier weakens. Oil production drops. Cell turnover already slows down to around a 60-day cycle (from a more youthful 28 days). Your skin is, in short, in a more delicate state than it used to be.

Retinol works by forcing cell turnover and essentially causing a controlled irritation response. On resilient skin, this process is manageable. On shifting, menopausal skin, it can tip into the infamous 'retinol purge' — a period of redness, flaking, sensitivity, and genuine misery that can last weeks. And many women find their skin simply never fully adjusts, leaving them with ongoing irritation and a compromised barrier.

That's a lot to ask of a skin that's already under significant stress.

What's the alternative?

This is where plant-based retinol alternatives — often called bio-retinol — come in. These are active compounds derived from plants that interact with the same collagen-boosting, cell-renewing pathways as Vitamin A retinol, but without the harsh irritation mechanism.

The one we formulated with is Bidens Pilosa — a botanical compound that has been studied for its ability to mimic retinol's benefits at a cellular level. At a 2% concentration, it stimulates collagen production, supports cell renewal, fades dark spots, and improves skin texture. Without the purge. Without the redness. Without the six-week 'it gets worse before it gets better' conversation.

But does it actually work?

The honest answer: yes, but differently. Traditional retinol works aggressively and relatively quickly. Bio-retinol works more gradually and gently — think of it as a supportive long-term strategy rather than a dramatic intervention. For younger skin in a hurry, retinol wins on speed. For menopausal skin that needs results without aggravation, a bio-retinol approach is often more effective in practice, because you can actually use it consistently without your face staging a protest.

Consistency is everything in skincare. A gentler ingredient you use every day will always outperform an aggressive one you can only use twice a week because your skin can't handle more.

Combining with SPF is non-negotiable

Whether you use traditional retinol or a bio-retinol alternative, morning SPF is essential. Both accelerate cell turnover, which means fresh, new skin cells are more vulnerable to UV damage. Daily SPF isn't optional — it's part of the equation.

Our Bio-Retinol serum uses 2% Bidens Pilosa alongside Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Hyaluronic Acid for an all-in-one collagen support and brightening routine. No purge required.
